Course Description

This training focuses on providing affirming and accessible counseling services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who identify as LGBTQAI+. Emphasizing the intersection of queer identity and IDD, these sessions highlight best practices for working with clients holding these intersecting identities. Participants will examine how ableism and heteronormativity shape clinical assumptions, influence access to care, and impact client autonomy. Presenters will share best practices, draw on clinical experiences, and guide participants through a case example to demonstrate affirming counseling interventions that support sexual and gender identity exploration among clients with IDD. Please note this is the first training of a 2 part series. Registration and payment is separate for each.

  • Identify common myths and assumptions regarding sexuality and gender identity among individuals with IDD.

  • Describe ethical concerns related to autonomy, reproductive rights, and gender-affirming care.

  • Recognize barriers to affirming mental health care for queer individuals with IDD.

  • Apply disability justice principles to counseling practice and advocacy
